We at De Vette Mossel strive to offer much more than merely perfectly prepared seafood – this is an experience, in unusual and informal surroundings, where you relax with friends (old ones and newly found ones) where your time is your own and where you may eat as much as you like – just like we do along the West Coast.
The excellent preparation of top quality seafood, in abundance, and value for money, is our pride.
The different dishes are prepared and presented one after the other as a rolling buffet. We strive to prepare seafood perfectly, and to serve it immediately thereafter. This guarantees freshly prepared seafood on the plate – an absolute must for exceptional seafood.

With arrival we welcome you with a complementary glass of good Cape wine.
We do have a well-stocked cash bar and specialize in stunning cocktails. Corkage is applicable.
Our Menu
Our menu consists of 7 courses (13 dishes) which are prepared and presented one after the other as a rolling buffet. Of each you may eat as much as you like – or can! Rock Lobster, Calamari, Prawns and Catch of the Day are additional for those of you who want to go all out!
But this is not as easy as it sounds….
The majority of the dishes is prepared in full view on open fires in front of you – this guarantees off–the-grid-fresh seafood – the only way to do it.
Relax, wind down – we eat for nearly three hours! And remember, we will never run out of anything – the worst that can happen is that it is on its way!
But please, do not expect hand-crafted crystal glasses, or silver cutlery. You are at the “beach”, and here we do it as we would along the West Coast- you eat with a mussel shell. If you do not think you’ll like it, or if you are of the opinion than you deserve more from life, you will most definitely be more at ease in a fancy French restaurant.
*We donate all food that could not be finished to seriously needy families in the area. Nothing goes to waste here.
which is baked throughout the meal, with farm butter and jam/preserve. (Careful, this is the delilah of the menu!), with onions, lots of garlic and farm butter;

Vegetable dish with milk and cheese (even Karoo farmers tuck in)

or Tropical Fruit (slides down your throat)
– (sorry – we do not do tea!)
Additional:
– with onions and oil/butter- the chef will say
– pan fried with onions and butter (this is how it should taste)
– taste the sea!
We only make use of green SASSI products in our buffet.*
Menu is subject to seasons and availability
* Prawns are listed by Sassi as Orange, thus “Think twice”. We only use sustainably farmed prawns served whole in the shell – we do NOT butterfly/devein our prawns. The delicate taste of prawns lies in the shell. We prepare and eat it like we do along the West Coast.
*West Coast Rock Lobster is listed by Sassi as Red, thus “Don’t buy”. It is not part of our buffet and is additional. It is thus for you to decide.

FUNCTIONS
De Vette Mossel lends itself perfectly to work functions, year-end functions, birthday bashes and other, where colleagues and friends can interact and enjoy themselves in an informal and relaxing atmosphere.
De Vette Mossel can easily accommodate large groups – we can seat up to 140 guests.
WEATHER
Although De Vette Mossel @ Hermanus is partly an open air restaurant, all seating is under roof and protected against wind and rain.
In any case, do not complain about the weather – this is Africa. We need rain to survive.
Our Story
Founded December 2004
In December 2004, owner Niël du Bois followed his heart, gave his creative spirit free reins, took the plunge and did what many people only dream about – opening an open air restaurant literally on a beach. Where the best seafood is prepared and enjoyed in Spartan surroundings – just like on the West Coast.
The first De Vette Mossel Beach Seafood Restaurant was born. On an isolated and pristine beach at Groot Brak River near Mossel Bay.
Thanks to the continuous support by our newly found Mossel friends, De Vette Mossel grew and grew until the first fire was lit at De Vette Mossel Harties in 2012 in the bushveld, in 2013 at De Vette Mossel Parys, and in December 2018 at De Vette Mossel Hermanus – right on the lagoon! At De Vette Mossel your hosts are local Hermanus residents, Gustave and Charné du Bois. They grew up with De Vette Mossel and love the sea and all it has to offer, as well as hosting guests.
The dozen or so chefs, cleaners and kitchen staff is a story in its own right. Only jobless people were employed, trained and today they form an integral part of De Vette Mossel. Without them, De Vette Mossel is not possible – they therefore also share in the fruits of success.

Behind which Dune?
DE VETTE MOSSEL @ HERMANUS is right on the water of the Klein River Lagoon at the Prawn Flats, around the corner from Grotto Beach.
Just as you leave Hermanus on the R43 en route to Stanford, turn right at the first turn-off that reads “Prawn Flats” and follow the De Vette Mossel signs.
Drop off guests at the restaurant door (“Drop off & go”), but park vehicles on the grass parking area at the top.
